Local Break combines public and licensed environmental information with break-specific presentation and derived analysis. Source availability varies by location and time, and not every source contributes to every forecast.
Primary sources
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
Local Break uses information published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and its services. Depending on the break and available coverage, this can include marine observations, forecasts, and related ocean and weather information.
National Data Buoy Center (NDBC)
NDBC provides offshore and coastal buoy and station observations. Local Break may use available measurements such as wave, wind, and water conditions to add observed context to a forecast.
Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS)
NOAA Tides & Currents / CO-OPS provides water-level observations and tide predictions for supported stations. Local Break may associate a saved break with an available station and present relevant tide context.
Open-Meteo
Open-Meteo delivers weather and marine forecast data derived from multiple numerical models. Local Break may use available wind, wave, swell, and related forecast fields delivered through Open-Meteo.
How Local Break uses source data
Local Break may normalize, combine, cache, and transform source data; associate it with a saved break; and create derived labels, summaries, scores, windows, or other planning guidance. Those Local Break outputs are modified presentations and are not official products of NOAA, NDBC, CO-OPS, Open-Meteo, or any underlying model provider.
Different providers and models publish on different schedules. Source updates, station coverage, model coverage, transmission delays, maintenance, and outages can affect what is available. The app may temporarily display cached information when a newer response is unavailable. Local Break does not guarantee that any forecast, observation, tide value, or derived window is current, complete, or accurate.
Use of a provider's name or data does not imply that the provider sponsors, endorses, or certifies Local Break.
Safety notice
Environmental data and surf forecasts are estimates, not promises. Buoys and stations can be distant from a break; local wind, bathymetry, currents, weather, structures, and rapidly changing conditions can produce a different result at the beach.
Local Break is not a navigation, rescue, weather-warning, or emergency service. Before entering the water, check official forecasts and alerts, observe actual conditions, follow lifeguards and local authorities, and make an independent decision based on your experience and ability. For official U.S. weather information and warnings, use the National Weather Service.
